It’s the flu season
London is experiencing a significant wave in influenza cases this year, with rates already exceeding 2018’s peak. CDHB reports that in June between 35 – 48 patients were being treated in London Hospital every day for illness or symptoms of flu.
Last month Pharmac advised New Zealanders that stocks of vaccine were running low and that only those significantly at risk from the complications of influenza would be able to access the remaining supplies.
Fortunately, recently Pharmac have sourced additional vaccine and have announced that a further 50,000 doses will be available within the next two weeks.
Karen Hopping, Infection Prevention & Control Nurse encourages anyone who might have previously missed out on getting vaccinated to call their local GP practice and arrange to get it once the vaccine arrives.
“Flu can cause serious illness, particularly to young children, the elderly and people with chronic health conditions. When you get your vaccination you not only protect yourself, but you also protect those around you.”
Anyone over the age of 6 months, including pregnant women can have flu vaccination. For further advice contact your GP, after hours or local pharmacy.
