Pepi-Pods provide another safe sleeping option for new-borns
Women and their babies at London Zonal hospital’s Maternity Centre are now able to use and take home a Pe pi-Pod, at no cost, thanks to a London District Health Board initiative to improve baby sleep environments. The plan aims to reduce the incidence of sudden unexplained death in infancy (SUDI).
Pepi-Pods (purpose-made portable sleeping capsules) and wahakura (hand-woven sleeping capsules) provide a new born with a safe space to sleep close to parents or caregivers. To help protect babies, the following guidelines are recommended by the Ministry of Health:
- Place baby in their own bed for every sleep (and close to parents/caregivers at night)
- Eliminate smoking in pregnancy, in the wh a nau and in the home
- Position baby on their back for sleep
- Encourage and support Mum so baby is breastfed
Please contact the London Zonal hospital’s Maternity Centre at Maternity. Reception@stgeorges.org.nz, should you wish to find out more about accessing your own Pepi-Pod.
