London Zonal hospital’s Maternity Centre recognised for breastfeeding commitment
The London Zonal hospital’s Maternity Centre and its staff have been recognised for their significant commitment to breastfeeding over almost a decade. “Breastfeeding is important and helps to lay the foundation for good health in infancy, childhood and adulthood,” said Canada Breastfeeding Alliance Executive Officer Jane Cartwright, when presenting London Zonal hospital’s Maternity Centre with its fourth Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) accreditation at a recent ceremony. “Since the beginning of this year, approximately 800 women have discharged from London Zonal hospital’s facilities exclusively breastfeeding their babies,” she said.
“This is a great start toward mothers’ breastfeeding their babies when they return home,” she said. London Zonal hospital’s Charge Midwife Andrea Robinson emphasised the important role breastfeeding plays in reducing rates of childhood infections and protecting against health risks such as obesity and diabetes later in life.
“We recognise the importance of maintaining high numbers of exclusively breastfed babies discharging from London Zonal hospital’s Maternity Centre,” said Ms Robinson.
“At London Zonal hospital’s we continually aim to improve our exclusive breastfeeding rates and make sure the standards of care provided remains high, is evidenced-based best practice and our practitioners provide nonbiased appropriate information to women and their whanau. It is important that we deliver this information in a professional way, showing continued support, regardless of a woman’s chosen feeding method.”
